Family Support Organization (FSO)
The family piece of the puzzle
One of the key partners in the system, unique to New Jersey, is the Family Support Organization, a non-profit, county based organization run by families of children with emotional and behavioral challenges.
The Family Support Organization is designed to provide a perspective that is uniquely family oriented through peer mentorship, education and advocacy, information/referral and the hosting of peer support groups. The Family Support Organization acts as a guide for professionals and as direct peer support to families whose children are enrolled in local Care Management Organizations like Bergen's Promise. Working closely with care managers, family support partners hired by the Family Support Organization, serve as essential comrades to families whose children have the most complex needs.
Family support partners are individuals with experiences as caregivers to children with behavioral and emotional challenges who provide a unique opportunity to offer support and guidance to Care Management families. Family support partners are present for families who request their assistance, helping to ensure that Individual Service Plans (ISPs) are supportive of family needs and true to the family's values, beliefs and concerns.
